Government plans for vocational GCSEs in England have been welcomed by the non-profit initiative Young People in Print & Packaging (YPIPP), as it calls for print and packaging businesses to help young people discover the careers available in the sector.
The proposals, announced by the Government on 23 September, could see subjects such as business management, finance, and manufacturing added to the curriculum alongside core academic classes. While the details are to be finalised, the new courses are targeting a September 2029 launch date. The news comes in the wake of a significant review into youth unemployment, with the Government also asking employers to provide 200,000 additional work experience placements for 14 to 16-year-olds alongside increased funding for apprenticeship matching schemes.
YPIPP has urged the Government to follow through on its commitments, and says the plans must be backed by opportunities to explore a broad range of industries.
Jo Stephenson, managing director of print and packaging marketing specialist Think B2B Marketing and Chairperson at YPIPP, said, “Rebuilding the missing rung between learning and work is welcome. For print and packaging businesses, this is a chance to show young people the range of careers behind products they use every day, from design and engineering to production, technology, and sustainability. The next generation of talent is out there, and we need to take this opportunity to reach them.
“Schools also need access to people who understand today’s workplaces – experienced professionals who can help teachers bring those careers to life. It’s important for businesses to offer meaningful work experience and build relationships with local schools to help capitalise on these new opportunities while it is still front-of-mind for all parties. A well-planned visit, a practical project, or time with a young employee can help a pupil see a future they hadn’t considered – who knows what they could go on to accomplish in future?”
YPIPP is helping to facilitate productive partnerships between schools, colleges, and employers to support specialist teaching and connect learning with evolving industry practice. Its work encompasses introductions between schools and print businesses alongside national initiatives like its Love Our Landmarks postcard campaign.
Businesses interested in supporting young people can contact YPIPP at www.ypip.co.uk or speak to their local Careers Hub about offering placements.
