The Hague, The Netherlands, Q4 2024: Afera, the European adhesive tape association, has released a new position paper entitled Product carbon footprint (PCF) calculation of adhesive tapes as part of the work undertaken by the Calculation Methods Workstream of Afera’s Flagship Sustainability Project (AFSP). Afera recommends an aligned PCF calculation methodology and a curated tool for general use in a sector to facilitate more accurate PCF values of adhesive tape products and increase transparency along the value chain.

Screenshot 2024 12 05 150651The product carbon footprint, one of the most established methods for determining the climate impact of a product, sums up the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a product over the various stages of its life cycle. PCF is becoming increasingly important within our industry for estimating the environmental impact of all types of adhesive tapes to meet future legal requirements as well as the demands of the supply chain for the calculation of scope 3 emissions.

Citing the position paper, Pablo Englebienne, Regulatory Affairs & Sustainability Manager at Afera, said, “Afera is committed to ensuring that PCF of adhesive tape products are calculated in a streamlined manner and with little effort. We are currently developing a curated web-based tool in collaboration with German Adhesive Association (IVK) and Sphera for voluntary use by adhesives and adhesive tape companies to generate reliable and accurate PCF values that can be communicated downstream in the supply chain.
