Alpha launch high speed paper winder
Alpha Converting has added the ALPHADRUM high speed, high specification two drum paper winder to its portfolio of winders.
The new unit has been developed for longer roll lengths and higher speeds. It can handle web widths up to 2800 mm, rewind diameters to 1800 mm and run at up to 1500 m/min.
Simon King, Alpha’s managing director, said: “We have been very successful with our ALPHAMATIC range of winders for short roll production, with rapid, fully automatic roll change capable of winding rolls up to 300 mm diameter from below 50m roll lengths. Our ALPHATWIN winders are suitable for the typical converter rolls of 600 to 1000 mm diameter.
“The new ALPHADRUM complements these machines for winding paper rolls over 1000 mm diameter.”
New tech added to tried and tested system
While the two drum system is tried and tested, the new ALPHADRUM is equipped with Alpha’s latest technology for high production efficiency:
- Automatic setting of top and bottom slitting knives.
- Automatic setting of the twin bow spreader system for optimum web separation.
- Thread assist from the slitting knives up to the winding position.
- Automatic web cut for roll change.
- Anti-vibration control of the top rider roll.
- Driven unwind with energy recirculation.

First unit sold to UK paper converter
“We have been fortunate to work with a progressive UK paper converter for the first machine,” said Mr King. “It is being supplied as a complete turnkey process and will be in production Q1 2021.

Second order
Alpha Converting often works collaboratively with other OEMs, supplying unwinds and rewinds to work with different processes.
The second new ALPHADRUM, due for delivery Q2 2021, is being supplied to Emerson and Renwick for integration with a coating line. E&R is a leading supplier to the converting industry specialising in all aspects of coating, embossing, printing and lamination.
