Bobst Manchester wins John Matteucci Technical Excellence Award
Carolin Struller of Bobst Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has won the 2012 John Matteucci Technical Excellence Award for Best Vacuum Web Coating Paper at the recent AIMCAL Web Coating & Handling Conference in Myrtle Beach. The awards recognise the best technical papers presented at the event.
Carolin presented a paper on AlOx Barrier Layers on Polymer Web which covers the effects of various parameters on barrier levels for R2R AlOx deposition onto BOPP and PET film via reactive evaporation; plain film surface chemistry and coating nucleation, growth and structure appear to be the governing factors for barrier performance. Carolin who is working on a PHD which she started in October 2010 at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), has built up a relationship with Bobst Manchester which has led to her working very closely with the company, splitting her time between the Heywood site and MMU where she is investigating Aluminium Oxide Coatings on BOPP Films.
The process of using an AlOx coating on BOPP film will open additional sales markets for Bobst Manchester and will result in flexibility for the customer as one machine can be used for two processes without compromise. AlOx coated BOPP films offer environmental advantages over traditional clear barrier films.
