Terinex Flexibles has further strengthened its operations with the purchase of a cutting-edge laser perforation machine for its Derby factory. This follows the £10 million investment in 2024 of its 3-acre Dove Valley Park facility, the UK’s first net zero CO2 rated building housing flexographic printing equipment.

An ongoing programme of investment in new equipment aligns closely with the company’s sharp focus on maintaining high manufacturing standards and supporting increased demand for specialised flexible packaging.

Demand for high quality packaging for the fresh produce market led to Terinex Flexibles exploring advanced perforation solutions before purchasing the PerfoTec equipment which offers customers improved freshness and increased shelf life. The new equipment uses a fast respiration meter to gauge the produce’s respiration rates and employs a data-driven design to determine the ideal balance of gasses inside the packaging, to create precise micro-perforations for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP).

Simon Smith, sales director at Terinex Flexibles says: “The PerfoTec machine allows us to improve and expand our offer to existing customers as well as opening up new business opportunities. By analysing the breathing behaviour of produce, the results from the machine’s fast respiration meter enable us to set precise parameters to keep fruit, vegetables and flowers fresh for longer. We are confident that this investment in new equipment will meet customer demand for producing and shipping high-quality fresh produce.”

To preserve natural quality and freshness, the advanced perforation system produces precise holes and perforation patterns that control the respiration of packaged produce, managing airflow and moisture levels. For customers, this optimises packaging performance, delivering reliable and consistent quality. Terinex Flexibles has also purchased their 5th slitting unit which is a new Ashe slitting machine ensuring strict quality control with cameras on each lane to check perforation consistency.

With the UK fresh food packaging market set to reach £3.4 billion by 2028 and growth in the fresh produce sector driven by a demand for nutritional and healthy food choices, it is essential that companies pay close attention to not just how fast produce reaches supermarkets, wholesale or retail stores, but also that it arrives in a pristine condition.
