OPEN HOUSE at SAM in Korea

22 companies visited the OPEN HOUSE from 19 to 21 June 2012 at the company SAM in Korea to hear about the latest technology of silicone, lacquering, laminating, extrusion coating and rotogravure printing machines. In addition the new MPC coating system developed by SAM Sungan PAGENDARM was demonstrated on a pilot line to interested visitors, a new application technique for high precision coatings of low-viscosity aqueous and solvent-based coating media.

A total number of 5 large machines in their final assembly were on display. As a standard procedure of SAM and SAM Sungan PAGENDARM, each machine is fully assembled before delivery and an extensive in-house testing is carried out. This includes not only a dry run with the complete commissioning of all winders, but also includes the testing of the coating systems. SAM is convinced – in contrast to the European machine manufacturers – that the cost for in-house assembly and testing – pays off through shorter installation and commissioning times at the customer site.

The visitors were impressed by the excellent Korean manufacturing quality of SAM, a difference to German or Swiss manufacturing quality was not recognizable. On the contrary, some visitors noted the Asian attention to detail, e.g. that the electrical wiring is carried out with wire marking on each cable.
Enthusiasm aroused by the visitors for the MPC technology, who today are processing their low viscosity coatings with conventional anilox rolls and by doing so are struggling with cleaning problems and frequent changes of their anilox rolls to change the coat weight. The MPC coating system coats with a smooth roller, the coating mass is applied by a nozzle and an engraved knife on the surface and then transferred onto the web. The metering is done by the knife!

“The MPC method is more accurate, cheaper to buy and has lower operating costs than any gravure process,” says Ralph Pagendarm. “The interest for the new MPC coating technology is huge, especially in the packaging sector”
