Compostable film helps spread healthy eating message in Italy

Innovia Films’ compostable, cellulose-based material NatureFlex NVS is helping to spread the healthy eating message in Italian schools. The EU-funded Frutta nelle Scuole (School Fruit Scheme) ensures children aged 6-11 years old are given individually wrapped portions of fresh organic fruit to enjoy during the school day. The transparent film used is converted and sold to packers by Italian company Corapack with many years experience in perforating and printing various flexible films.

“NatureFlex NVS was the ideal choice to flow wrap the fruit as it not only protects the product inside due to its semipermeability to moisture but also provides good machinability and printability, ensuring a nice pack appearance,” explains Corapack sales manager Fabrizio Radice.

“In addition the film has excellent environmental attributes being compostable and made from renewable resources.”

Beginning life as a natural product, wood (from managed plantations operating on good forestry principals, FSC or equivalent), NatureFlex is certified compostable in both home and industrial composting environments and is suitable for anaerobic digestion. It offers advantages for packing and converting including inherent dead fold and anti-static properties, high gloss and transparency, resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases, aromas and mineral oils and a wide heat-seal range.

“We are very happy to be involved in this project supporting Corapack who promoted the usage of our NatureFlex film for the Frutta nelle Scuole project,” says Giorgio Berton, TS&D specialist, Innovia Films. “The fresh organic fruit stays in premium condition due to being wrapped in NatureFlex.”

The film has been specifically formulated to offer improved stiffness under chill cabinet conditions and a controlled level of moisture permeability with a heat-sealable conversion-friendly coating on both sides.
