Giant moves to business with China

When a Chinese packaging films producer decided to double production capacity, it commissioned three 11 meter wise slitter rewinders from Goebel to handle the work

The widest slitter rewinder in the world will soon be shipped to China Soft Packaging Group which has ordered three 11 m- wide monoslit giants from Goebel Schneid- und Wickelsysteme intended for processing plastic films.

With this new design the company has set a benchmark in the processing of film.

“This accomplishment underlines Goebel’s leading technical expertise in the construction of slitter rewinders,” says managing director Dr Ralf Enderle. “The many years of experience of our specialists in engineering and assembly together with the use of the latest technologies and materials are decisive components in the realisation of such a project. A product of such high quality can only be created with teamwork between all of the company’s experts involved and our partners on the supplier side. This means that Goebel is very well prepared for future challenges.”

The machine is currently being packed in Darmstadt for transport to China; 15 large wooden cases will be required, the three largest are up to 17 m long each and weigh up to 34 t. They contain the winding section of the machine, the slitting unit and the web infeed frame of the machine.

Commissioning is planned after reassembly at the works with the customer. During this time, an experienced team from Goebel will monitor the assembly and remain at the  customer’s disposal for some further days for on-site training.

Setting new standards

The 11m-wide monoslit giant sets new standards. Within three months, several thousand parts were assembled and more than 3,000 m of electric cable laid.

A particularly impressive component is the grooved roller 11,370 mm in length with 5,450 grooves of approximately 1 mm width distributed over the entire width. This means that it is possible to slit finished rolls which are between 300 and 3,300 mm widein 2 mm graduations. Slitting is carried out using razor blades which engage precisely into these grooves. The slitter rewinder accommodates stock rolls with a diameter of 1,500 mm maximum and processes them into finished rolls with a maximum diameter of 1,200 mm. The unwind width can be selected by the customer from between 9,400 mm and 10,400 mm. In future 18 winding stations will be available for 24 hour production.

With its state-of-the-art technology it processes films with a thickness of 10 to 80ºm. The test run in Darmstadt was more than satisfactory.

“Over the entire speed range of 0 to 1,500 m/min. the machine runs extremely smoothly, “ says head of design engineering Dr Hans-Peter Bauer. “That is unique for a slitter rewinder with these dimensions.”

In addition the noise level was considerably lower than the required noise emission value while the peripherals and internal power supply have been redesigned. Machine set-up takes place at ground level; costly foundation works and cable ducts are a thing of the past.

China Soft Packaging Group which currently produces 350,000 t of plastic film a year has plans to increase this by 50%. Convinced of the quality and the technical solutions, the customer commissioned Goebel with the construction of the machines, underlining the close mutual trust built up over many years.

“It is a pleasure to be able to offer our customers solutions and develop these for them, enabling production efficiency and production performance to be increased,” concludes Enderle.

Goebel Schneid- und Wickelsysteme is a leading supplier of slitter rewinders for the processing of papers, plastic films and flexible packaging materials. The product range includes two-drum winders for paper and cardboard-box processing, fully automatic machines for narrow rolls and state-of-the-art systems for film processing.
